RoadJoy….VW Style! (3/28/2008)
Nestled in the trunk of my Jetta is a special home assembled kit filled
with a few basic tools, a can of compressed air with sealant (for flats), quality 12’ booster cables (for folks who left their lights on), a tow strap, and a couple of sets of Boat trailer bearings (complete with 2 bearings, 2 bearing races, a cotter pin, a tube of grease and a grease seal), especially to assist those friends who have burned out the bearings on their boat trailer (or Snowmobile trailer) with those small 8 inch wheels that spin like crazy and burn out as they head down the highway! Even a paper back copy of Rick Warren’s best selling “Purpose Driven Life” and a Canadian Bible Society paperback edition of the “New Testament in Today’s English.”
Whenever I stop along the highway to assist, I’m greeted with “You are such a Good Samaritan” and, “I can’t believe you carry boat
trailer bearings with you!” Each week I travel along Hwy 11 and Hwy 17 putting on about 1000 Km per week and leave myself a little extra time so that I can stop and help! I even carry surgical latex gloves to keep my hands clean while assisting! I serve as a Regional Minister with the Evangelical Missionary Church of Canada and spend a lot of time on the road in my Jetta TDI! My roadside adventures always lead to VW conversations and I’m pleased to tell them that we’ve had many in the family over the years.
The entire kit takes up very little space. An Automotive Parts
supplier in our city of North Bay is kind enough to let me purchase the bearing kits at wholesale price, but everyone thus far has insisted on paying for them at roadside! (They only cost 12.61!). Almost all of these trailers are a 1 inch shaft so a couple of kits are all I need to carry to spread the joy! I simply restock regularly!
It’s not rocket science by any means but it sure makes a difference in someone’s day, one simple assist at a time. When all else fails, my road side assistance available through my cell phone supplier gets folks off the highway and to a local shop for help.
